2012 - Exp shows strong in ENR rankings

Exp has been ranked #61 on the list of "Top 500 Design Firms" by Engineering News Record (ENR). The list, which is published annually in April, ranks the 500 largest U.S.-based design firms, publicly and privately held, based on design-specific revenue.

In addition to the Top 500 Design Firm ranking, exp has also been named #44 in ENR's Top Designers in International Markets; #36 in Top Pure Designers and #6 in the Telecom sector.

2012 - exp Energy Services is recognized by Imperial Oil for second year in a row

At the 2012 Annual Imperial Oil Contractor Safety Forum, exp Energy Services Ltd (formerly Barenco) in Markham, Ontario was recognized by Imperial Oil for Demonstrated Safety Leadership and Superior Safety Performance for the second year in a row. This award was given to Imperial Oil contractors who accomplished the following in 2011:

  1. Lost Time Injury/Incident Rate (LTIR) of 0.0
  2. Total Recordable Incident/Injury Rate (TRIR) of 0.0
  3. Greater than 10,000 work hours
  4. Strong Safety Culture embedded in management, supervisors and field work
  5. Excellent Behaviour Based Safety (BBS) and Loss Prevention System (LPS) Stewardship

2012 - Innovative, bold and proactive - Quebec City team wins a Visionary award

At the 2012 Grand Prix of Quebec Consulting Engineering, we were recognized for our Photocatalytic Treatment of Gas project at the Uniboard Pfleiderer plant in Moncure, NC. Our Quebec City team won the most prestigious award of the evening, the Visionary Award. This award is given for a project that stands out in terms of innovation, boldness or pro-activity.

For this project, we invented a new oxidation process to destroy various volatile organic compounds. This technology uses only the energy required to destroy polluting volatile organic compounds found in industrial gas emissions. Unlike incinerators, it doesn't produce any additional greenhouse gases.

2012 - Exp wins prestigious AIA award for St. Louis icon

The American Institute of Architects Illinois Honor Awards event was held recently in Springfield, IL. Exp received the Louis Sullivan award, "the highest overall honor for a project which transformed a community through the principles of the AIA Livable Community criteria." The award recognized our work on Minoru Yamasaki's Main Terminal at Lambert International Airport. Designed in 1959, this terminal is a mid-century modern icon and gateway to the city of St. Louis. Our work included the renovation and restoration of the dramatic concrete vaults and skylights.

Among the jury comments: "The jury was thrilled to see a modern landmark given the same attention usually reserved for traditionally historic properties. This restoration enhances Yamasaki's bold vision. The light coves and ceiling materials cleanly and crisply accent form. The jury was impressed by the project's sensitivity, attention to detail and overall elegance. They also applauded how it addressed the AIA's 10 Principles of Livable Communities."

2012 - Yeh Student Center Addition Wins Special Achievement Award

The exp Chicago office won a Special Achievement Award at the American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois' 41st annual Engineering Excellence Awards Competition for their project "Yeh Student Center Addition." The addition was designed for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

2011 - Yorkville Dam Project Wins Honor Award from American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois

Teng, part of the exp family of companies, received the Honor Award from The American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois (ACEC-IL) for their work on the rehabilitation of the Glen D Palmer Dam project in Yorkville, IL. The Glen D Palmer Dam in Yorkville Illinois was plagued by a number of drownings over the past 35 years and the City of Yorkville requested the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) help in solving this safety hazard. Teng provided planning, design and analysis services and worked closely with the IDNR, the City of Yorkville and a Citizens Advisory Committee. The result is a significant safety improvement, improved environmental conditions for fish passage, and a recreational benefit to the local community. The Honor Awards is the highest category of award the ACEC-IL gives out, followed by Merit Awards and Special Achievement Awards. The project will compete in the ACEC-IL's ultimate award, the Eminent Conceptor, and is also eligible to enter ACEC's National Competition in February 2012.

2011 - CFER - Business and Recovery Training Centre recognized at the World Architecture Festival

An exp project that is currently being review for LEED® Silver certification was a finalist at the World Architecture Festival in the Production, Energy and Recycling category. A teaching plant for Waste Management (WM) and the Des Chênes School Board in Drummondville, QC, green energy is used to heat the building by recovering biogases from a nearby landfill site. The project is helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and proves how exp's local partnerships are supporting sustainability in local communities.

2011 - FIS Maitland building named Commercial Interior Project of the Year by U.S. Green Building Council Central Florida Chapter

The team at exp provided Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)® consulting, energy modelling and commissioning for the FIS building at Maitland Summit. The building, which has already achieved LEED® for Commercial Interiors Gold Certification, was awarded Project of the Year in the Commercial Interior category by the U.S. Green Building Council Central Florida Chapter.

2011 - Exp ranked 1st on MEP Commissioning GIANTS 2011

Consulting-Specifying Engineer magazine has ranked exp first in their annual ranking of engineering firms providing commissioning or retro-commissioning services. The list recognizes the leading mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) and fire protection engineering firms in North America.

2011 - Exp ranked 4th on MEP GIANTS 2011

Consulting-Specifying Engineer magazine has ranked exp fourth in their annual ranking of engineering firms. The list recognizes the leading mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) and fire protection engineering firms in North America.

2011 - Exp ranked 2nd on Hot Firm List for 2011

Exp has climbed to second place on the 2011 Zweig Letter Hot Firm list. The company placed third on the list in 2010, sixth on the list in 2009 and debuted in tenth place in 2008. The list, published every year since 2000, recognizes the fastest-growing architecture, engineering and environmental consulting firms on the basis of percentage growth and dollar growth.

2011 - Atlantic canada team on top 101 companies list

Progress Media ranked exp's Atlantic Canada team 46th on the 2011 Top 101 Companies list. The annual list ranks companies in the Atlantic provinces based on revenue. Our team moved up one position from last year's standing.

2011 - John Street Roundhouse in Toronto receives award

The John Street Roundhouse in Toronto received an Award of Excellence from Heritage Toronto for the preservation of character defined elements and adaptive re-use as a public space. Formerly the Canadian Pacific Railway Roundhouse, the building is now a multi-use facility that houses retail outlets and a train museum. The team at exp provided structural design expertise on the project.

2011 - Dental college project wins ENR award

ENR Southeast named Georgia Health Sciences University, College of Dental Medicine in Augusta, GA as the winner of the 2011 Best Project Awards in the Best Higher Education/Research Project category. With over 300 dental chairs and a Class C Operating Room, the new facility is one of the largest dental schools in The United States. The team at exp was responsible for the mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP), fire protection and AV/Telecom/Data for the concept, planning, design and construction phases.

2011 - Crapaud Wastewater Lagoon Upgrades Named Project of the Year (Small Communities) by Atlantic Canada Water and Wastewater Association (ACWWA)

The ACWWA awards recognize water and wastewater projects in Atlantic Canada that demonstrate innovation and state-of-the-art technology. The team at exp provided the conceptual planning, design and construction management services for the lagoon in Crapaud, PEI. Originally constructed in the 1970's, the lagoon did not meet current environmental standards and was operating at capacity. The upgrades provide the community with 25 years of capacity for growth. The project converted the single cell lagoon into three cells: an initial aerated cell, a polishing cell and a constructed wetland. A wastewater pumping station was also installed to prevent hydraulic surcharges due to the increase in the liquid level and geotube technology was used to remove and dewater the municipal sludge that had accumulated over the past 40 years.

2011 - Greg Hildebrand Recognized by CSA

Greg Hildebrand, C.E.T., M.Sc. (Eng), a member of exp's Façade Engineering Group, was recognized by The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) for 25 years of commitment and dedication as a CSA member. He currently chairs the A440.4 installation committee and has been an active and vocal participant in the development of this standard. He is currently part of the Canadian/US harmonized window standard effort.

2011 - exp among top 150 global design firms and top 200 international design firms

According to Engineering News-Record, exp ranked number 64 on the Top 150 Global Design Firms list and number 55 among the Top 200 International Design list. The Top 150 Global Design Firm list ranks the largest world design firms, based on total design-specific revenue regardless of where the projects were located, while the Top 200 International Design Firm list ranks firms based on design-specific export revenue generated from projects outside each firm's respective home country.

2011 - sunnybrook health sciences centre, with exp as the structural engineer of record, wins best of the best award from TCA

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, a project on which exp was the Structural Engineer of Record and part of a larger design team, was a 2010 Best of the Best award winner from the Toronto Construction Association (TCA) in the large project category. The Best of the Best awards recognize outstanding contributions from prime contractors and project teams who have completed extraordinary projects and demonstrated outstanding leadership and business practices.
