Exp wins prestigious AIA award

2012/04

The American Institute of Architects Illinois Honor Awards event was held recently in Springfield, IL. Exp received the Louis Sullivan award, "the highest overall honor for a project which transformed a community through the principles of the AIA Livable Community criteria." The award recognized our work on Minoru Yamasaki's Main Terminal at Lambert International Airport. Designed in 1959, this terminal is a mid-century modern icon and gateway to the city of St. Louis. Our work included the renovation and restoration of the dramatic concrete vaults and skylights.

Among the jury comments: "The jury was thrilled to see a modern landmark given the same attention usually reserved for traditionally historic properties. This restoration enhances Yamasaki's bold vision. The light coves and ceiling materials cleanly and crisply accent form. The jury was impressed by the project's sensitivity, attention to detail and overall elegance. They also applauded how it addressed the AIA's 10 Principles of Livable Communities."
