Our team provided turn-key environmental services during various phases of construction for this new, eight-story building on Toronto's waterfront. The site, which was created by fill materials, was impacted with contaminants and was considered sensitive due to the proximity of the lake. A risk-based approach (along with risk management measures) was adopted to manage human and ecological concerns. The project also involved the remediation of impacted soil and air quality monitoring during construction to minimize impact on workers and the neighborhood.

GBC - Waterfront Health Sciences Center
The new waterfront Health Sciences campus for George Brown College is located in Toronto's East Bayfront development. Our team conducted a review study to meet Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency requirements, which included possible environmental effects, the prediction of any significant environmental effects as well as measures to mitigate them. The goal is to create a student-centered, innovative campus and bring the college's health sciences programs together. The center will eventually house close to 4,000 students.

Greenwood Racetrack Redevelopment
Formerly Greenwood Racetrack, the site was evaluated for potential use as a residential development with an engineered wetland and storm water retention pond. Our team completed an investigation and risk assessment on the land and found fill contaminated with heavy metals in the subsurface of the site. Based on the risk assessment, it was concluded that no adverse health effects would be expected from the metals located in the subsurface soil for either the minimum or maximum groundwater loading scenarios. The site was developed successfully and is now a bustling residential neighborhood.

This 108-km toll highway is a key artery for the Greater Toronto Area. Originally constructed in the 1990s it is roughly two-thirds rigid pavement core, and just over a third of flexible pavement (extension built in 2000-2001). Our team was the bid pavement design consultant for the east and west extension and provided quality assurance services and materials testing. We were also the geotechnical consultant.

Highway 55 Overpass Replacement
After an annual inspection revealed an advanced state of deterioration and an urgent need to repair the slab, the Quebec Ministry of Transportation decided to replace this single-span, five-lane overpass located a few hundred yards from the Canada-US border station on Highway 55. The concrete slab is supported by 10 pre-stressed concrete girders with a "reinforced earth" and a 19,375 SF retaining wall. Due to the location's topography, our team needed to find a cost-effective compromise between the length of the overpass and the height of the abutments. Services provided include; supplementary land surveys, civil, plans and specifications, cost estimates, proposal review, recommendations for construction contracts, payment processing and recommendations, acceptance of work and as-built drawings.

Our team has been involved with three environmental effects and compliance monitoring programs at the plant site, residue disposal area and the groundwater well field. Data gathered includes groundwater head levels, and groundwater and stream chemistry. Manual measurements and sample collection are combined with data loggers for head levels at selected sites. We performed the initial design of the programs (refining if required), development and assessment of QA/QC protocols, as well as the development of spreadsheets for data storage and collation. We interpret the information both quarterly and annually to determine if impacts have been identified that warrant further action.

As part of an environmental assessment of a new gypsum mine, a 2.7-km stretch of Glen Brook was identified as exhibiting excellent salmonid habitat, which was confirmed by the presence of both Brook Trout and Atlantic Salmon. Our team conducted a detailed assessment of the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the section of the brook, and provided a detailed report documenting baseline conditions prior to mine site development. We also provide on-going monitoring, including flows and water chemistry, annual habitat assessments, groundwater-stream interaction assessment electrofishing and development of enhancement protocols to improve habitat.

Sea-to-Sky Highway
The upgrades to this 100-km of highway between Vancouver and Whistler, BC, was a key road improvement for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. It included construction of 48 new bridges/interchanges, 219 MSE retaining walls, 2.4M cu. meters of earthwork, and 450,000 tons of asphalt paving. Our team worked with our client through the proposal design and provided geotechnical-related activities including back slopes in soil and rock, slope stabilizations, retention systems, bridge foundations, embankments and pavements for a portion of this highway. The highway remained open to traffic which posed additional challenges to design and construction.
